The smallest turtle in North America (adult bog turtles only grow to 4.5 inches!) has long been threatened by habitat loss, but now an unknown disease is killing these tiny creatures. The Wildlife Conservation Society’s Global Health Program is partnering with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation and the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program to come to these turtles' rescue. The groups are locating wild turtles and assessing their health in the hopes of finding a cure.

The bog turtle shown here is in its natural habitat in New York State.
