A New View of Hurricane Katia

A look at this NASA picture makes one appreciate that Katia never made landfall.

Unlike Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, Hurricane Katia skirted the Northeastern U.S. when it passed the region Sept. 5. This NASA astronaut photo, taken from the International Space Station, shows how lucky that was. Though the storm had diminished from Category 4 to a Category 1 hurricane by the time this picture was taken, it was clearly still a storm that was plenty big enough to soak the already drenched region. The "sediment plume" pointed out in the photo is a result of the mud kicked up by Irene and Lee washing out of the Hudson River watershed and into New York Harbor and the Atlantic.
