Hurricane Irene, Approaching East Coast

A huge Category 2 storm, Hurricane Irene is expected to make landfall as a major Category 3 hurricane this weekend.

Hurricane Irene is headed for the U.S. and is expected to re-gain Category 3 strength before making landfall in North Carolina. The hurricane is so big that hurricane-force winds extend nearly 90 miles from the center in all directions, and tropical storm-force winds extend 290 miles from the eye of the storm.
