As a winter of record snow continued, the Feb 1-2 blizzard dumped several inches – or, in many cases, feet – of snow and ice on a wide swath of the U.S., from the Midwest through the Northeast. Record snow totals were recorded in Chicago and elsewhere, and an estimated one in three Americans was affected.

The government captured this image of the storm, more than 1,200-miles across at 4:30 p.m. Feb 1, with a NOAA-NASA satellite.
