The floods here have killed and displaced many people, and in a poor, rural country like Vietnam you can imagine the devastation that has on the people and their farmland, not just the immediate effects, but also the long term problems that will remain for the people concerning their farming and their livelihoods.
The photo was taken after three days non stop rain in Hoi An and shows what is normally a relaxing spot to sit by the river and watch the world go by. That day I sat opposite the river for a few hours and slowly watched it rise and begin to come up to the doors of the first shops and cafes along the front. The locals seemed quite calm, i was told it's been a lot worse their before when they have had to empty houses and move possessions to higher ground. I think on this occasion they were spared this trauma as the storm moved northwards before it could do any real damage to this town.
