Bench in the Flood

The floods here have killed and displaced many people, and in a poor, rural country like Vietnam you can imagine the devastation that has on the people and their farmland, not just the immediate effects, but also the long-term problems that will remain for the people concerning their farming and their livelihoods. The photo was taken after three days nonstop rain in Hoi An and shows what is normally a relaxing spot to sit by the river and watch the world go by. That day I sat opposite the river for a few hours and slowly watched it rise and begin to come up to the doors of the first shops and cafes along the front. The locals seemed quite calm. I was told it's been a lot worse there before, when they have had to empty houses and move possessions to higher ground. I think on this occasion they were spared this trauma as the storm moved northwards before it could do any real damage to this town. October 2, 2007

Flooding in Vietnam

Is hard to remember a typhoon so hard in Hue before. I am lucky my home is solid and in the high place of Hue, so my home was not affected inside by water, but many people had problems in their homes. October 4, 2007 Hue, Vietnam

The surge is coming. The flood water has burst the banks and swamped the local town of Pangbourne. The waters rise, and yet the forecasted surge is still to come. We have lived in this village for 33 years and have never experienced rain of monsoon savagery before. July 23, 2007
