Red knots rely on horseshoe crab eggs in the Chesapeake Bay region to sustain themselves on their long migrations between Tiera Del Fuego and the Arctic, and horseshoe crab fishing regulations have become controversial because of steep declines in red knot numbers.

In New Jersey, an effort to restore horseshoe crab-habitat destroyed by Hurricane Sandy has helped to ensure that the conditions remain intact for these species to survive in proximity to so much human development and impact.
