Mountain Gorillas

A mountain gorilla census supported in part by the Wildlife Conservation Society has found that the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, Africa, is the only place on Earth with an expanding population of any gorilla species.
At least 400 gorillas live in the park, an increase of as much as 33% from five years earlier. The only other population of mountain gorilla is to the south, where 480 live in the Virunga Volcanoes.
“The latest census of mountain gorillas in Bwindi provides the conservation community with much needed good news,” said Dr. Liz Macfie, Gorilla Coordinator for the Wildlife Conservation Society. “The results also show us that enforcement efforts by the Uganda Wildlife Authority there are paying off.”
