Environmentalists celebrated the announcement that GenOn's Potomac River coal-fired power plant in Alexandria, Va., would close by October 2012. The plant started burning coal in 1949 but because, like other plants of its generation, it was never required to install modern pollution controls. Plants like it are grandfathered in from many Clean Air Act regulations, despite coal-fired power plants being the country's major source of soot, smog, carbon dioxide and many toxic air pollutants.

The Sierra Club was among those groups celebrating the announcement. It's Beyond Coal campaign recently got $50 million boost from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
