The billboard was very controversial and I think it was more so because it conflated a lack of knowledge of the origins of our daily energy usage and quality of energy with just simple nationalism or, being more local. I really do think that we've negatively politicized our local-sourcing of energy/food/etc in light of globalism too fast - we've chosen local-sourcing as a proxy for other more topical, less long term values arguments (such as do you want your cousin or an arab helping you type of thing), not realizing that detracts from the positive reinforcement of even supplementary self-sustenance.
