UnHappy Hipsters Search for the Elusive Eco-Silver Bullet

Your street-sign fence post can neutralize your carbon footprint.

While laughing my way through one of my new favorite Websites UnHappy Hipsters, I stumbled, (in the original sense, not the website sense) on a brilliant little post. A little background on UnHappy Hipsters (tagline: it's Lonely Here in the Modern World"). It's a blog that grabs shots from back issues of Dwell magazine and gives them ironic and funny photo captions. In case you're not familiar with Dwell, (tagline: "At Home in the Modern World") it's a beautifully photographed very modern design and home mag. Basically, UnHappy Hipsters combines simplicity and humor -- some might say it is a blog at its best.

The post is a photo of a woman watering a tree in front of a fence made of old street signs. The caption reads: "Sure she was watering a street tree during a statewide drought. But the gate was made of recycled street signs. Carbon footprint: neutral." After making me laugh out loud the post also made me consider our desire for a silver bullet when it comes to going green. I believe there's a difference between lying to yourself (No, that organic cotton T-shirt will not counteract your gas-guzzling Hummer), and thinking positively and looking for creative real solutions for your "eco-sins." For example, my favorite Christmas present this year was from my sister; she offset my trip to South Africa.

I love how creatively people use objects that might otherwise become trash, like this fence. But, I do wonder if we let ourselves off too easily when we purchase something like this. Anyway, I hope this photo makes you think as much as it makes you laugh.
