Climate Change in New York City

Storms and sea levels rising, the stuff disaster films are made of.

the day after tomorrow
It's a fairly miserable day in New York City today and reading the report by the New York City Panel on Climate Change makes me think I should get used to this weather. According to the study we can expect more flooding and those once-in-a-century storms to hit here every 15 years. Temperatures could rise up to 7.5 degrees F by 2080 and sea levels could rise 12 to 23 inches by the end of the century. Scary stuff, the stuff that NYC disaster movies are made of, think "The Day After Tomorrow" or even TDG's "What if a Hurricane Hit New York City?"

Whether these films were the inspiration for Mayor Michael Bloomberg to form the panel on Climate Change, the results of the study are clear and seem to predict Bloomberg's worst fears:

"The climate change projections developed by our expert panel put numbers to what we already know -- climate change is real and could have serious consequences for New York if we don't take action."

While I take cover under my desk, tell us about global warming predictions in your area, and send me your pictures of climate change here.

the day after tomorrow
I can't imagine hailing a cab in this weather.
