DHL, U.S. Post Office Lead Climate-Friendly Survey

UPS and FedEx Lag, But None Score Very High

DHL and the good-old U.S. postal service are the best choices for shipping packages this holiday, according to a new analysis by Climate Counts, a non-profit organization.

UPS and FedEx did not score as well, according to the group. Even the leaders, however, scored only 45 (DHL) and 43 (USPS) out of a possible 100 points, with UPS at 39 and FedEx at 28.

"While we’re pleased the shipping sector has begun to take action on climate, they, like most of us in the business community, have a long way to go," said Gary Hirshberg, CEO of Stonyfield Farm and board chair of Climate Counts. "If I had ever come home from school with a 45, I would have been in trouble – even if it were the holidays."

Companies were rated on 22 criteria in four areas:

In all, 60 companies were rated on their commitments to reducing their contribution to global warming. Canon, Nike and Unilever top the list, while some at the bottom include Amazon.com, Jones Apparel, Apple, eBay, Limited Brands and Levi Strauss. Companies are ranked on a pocket-sized "Holiday Shopping Guide" that can be downloaded from ClimateCounts.org.
