The Green Carpet: Hollywood

Hollywood's Hot Oscar Week: Going Green

Celebrities Enjoy Eco Parties, Rides, Food and More

Now we know why Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Aniston were once in mad love with Tate Donovan — he's charmarrific! The dude rode his bike to Global Green's pre-Oscar bash at Avalon in Hollywood. "With our weather, there's no excuse for not riding a bike in L.A.," Donovan told TheGreenCarpet:Hollywood (TGC:H). Although he admitted that the car-loving city's not the friendliest turf for bicyclists: "People actually yell at me for being on my bike."

Donovan was joined on the green carpet by actresses Salma Hayek (looking svelte post-pregnancy), Sophia Bush, Molly Sims, and Tia Carrere; a hirsute Adrian Grenier and fellow actor Christian Slater; director Oliver Stone; Gov. Bill Richardson; and two of the evening's performers, Michelle Branch and Damien Rice.

Just about every star pledged a vote for Sen. Barack Obama, claiming he's the most eco-minded choice for president. Dana Delany told TGC:H, "The most important thing is to get a Democrat in there." She also waxed enthusiastically about her Prius: "I adore it." Model Josie Maran talked up her new line of nontoxic makeup. And NBC's upcoming "Quarterlife" star Bitsie Tulloch revealed that her show's character deals with global warming — and that their set is as green as can be. "We even recycle script pages."

Several actors chimed in about ending paper waste on productions. In the past, script rewrites (and we're talking dozens) were printed out and distributed to every actor and crewmember. These days, shows are finding ways to dole out scripts digitally. "I have no problem learning my lines off a computer screen," Donovan offered.

Surprisingly, stars were brave enough to divulge their occasional eco-sins. "I can't say no to turning on the heat for my wife when she gets cold," Donovan admitted. "Why can't you ladies just wear sweaters?" CBS and Showtime's Dexter star Julie Benz told TGC:H she doesn't currently drive an energy-efficient car, "but I want to." And Maran confessed she still sometimes drinks from plastic water bottles.

Green cars also took center stage at Global Green's bash, where the Fisker Karma Plug-in Hybrid (hands-down the sexiest automobile on the planet, with a dashboard that looks like a cell phone) and a supercool three-wheel Aptera Typ-1 were on display.

Speaking of eco rides, the Smart (Car) House in Venice, CA, hosted a hip Live Earth-sponsored soiree, with über-DJ Samantha Ronson spinning tunes. Stars Mindy Kaling (Kelly from The Office), Jennifer Coolidge, and Fisher Stevens joined Live Earth founder Kevin Wall to munch organic hors d'oeuvres and check out the new Smart Fortwo, hailed as America's most fuel-efficient nonhybrid vehicle. We vote it's the cutest, too.

Although the writers' strike threw a wet blanket on some Oscar festivities (Vanity Fair's famous party being one casualty), eco gifting suites were out in full force. The Sofitel Hotel was home to the Alive Expo Green Pavilion, where singer Tiffany and actors Sally Kirkland and Bruce Davison sampled organic green tea and natural-care body products and indulged in detox services. A few miles down the road, Recess Salon's green retreat offered organic mani/pedis and showed off Earth Friendly eco cleaning products and Brilliant Earth conflict-free diamonds.

As Hollywood's finest walked the red carpet in pursuit of Oscar gold, stars were sure shining a whole lot greener.

GREEN THUMBS UP TO...
Rainn Wilson, this year's Independent Spirit Award's hysterical host, for his sensational send-up of green: "Every aspect of this show is environmentally conscious, from the flooring material to the tent fabric to the tablecloths. Course, in the old days, you woulda called an awards show held in a tent covered in Astroturf 'cheap'...but nowadays you call it 'green.' Very clever, Spirit Awards."

Wilson also threatened to recycle a joke from last year's potty-mouthed host, Sarah Silverman, and said that in honor of the show's zero-waste policy, "Sienna Miller has offered to finish everyone's drinks tonight." Bottoms up, Sienna!

BROWN THUMBS DOWN TO...
Tired trainwreck Tara Reid, who attended an Oscar eco-gifting suite, loaded up on swag, and departed in a fuel inefficient red Corvette (see the footage on tmz.com).
