Fall EcoFashion for the Fellas

Whether you're a surfer dude college student or a corporate commando, just because you're a guy doesn't mean you don't care about what you wear. Long-gone are the days when having style was just for the ladies and bohemian artists. So while you're undoubtedly out doing some Fall shopping, keep your mother in mind (Mother Earth that is!) and peruse some planet-friendly additions to your wardrobe. If you like cotton, look for organic versions of your favorite styles; if you're more of a technical fabrics kind of guy, check out recycled polyester and Tencel. Consider the ideas below just a jumping-off point: There's so much ecofashion out there for guys it can't all be covered here. Warm Layers

turk and taylor sweatshirt

Turk + Taylor, Tomorrow's World Add a little funk to your closet with this organic linen baseball hoodie from Turk + Taylor, which is also hand-dyed using eco-friendly pigments. For a roomier fit, try Tomorrow's Worlds' organic cotton hoodie in natural, denim or black. The minimally processed, hemp hooded sweater from Rawganique is a spiffier update on the typical hoodie, and comes in six warm colors perfect for Fall.

loomstate sweatshirt

Loomstate, REI, MEC Loomstate's track jacket is a very hip organic cotton version of the old-school warm-up layer, and would be super-cool paired with jeans. REI's grey houndstooth jacket is made from organic cotton and has a subtle plaid pattern and striped lining. Mountain Equipment Coop's recycled polyester quilted vest will keep you warm and give your style a bit of an edge with its modern cut and colors. Pants

patagonia corduroys

Patagonia Patagonia makes a full line of men's casual clothes and even underwear, all of which are made from organic materials, recycled polyester and other ecofabrics. Patagonia also donates a percentage of its profits to environmental organizations and has several company-wide initiatives to cut down on waste and fuel use. Corduroys are a must-have for Fall; try on an organic cotton pair!

samunderneath bamboo pants

Sameunderneath If you don't have to wear a suit to work, but aren't quite allowed to wear jeans, soft and comfy bamboo trousers are a good compromise. These from Sameunderneath come in chocolate brown or jet black.

ecolution hemp pants

Ecolution These organic hemp cargo pants from Ecolution are ideal go-to slacks for everyday wear, since hemp not only requires little to no pesticides to grow, but is also extremely tough and holds up for years, even under regular wear. Shirts

howies shirt

Howie's Howie's makes great casual wear for guys, and pretty much all their fabrics are planet-friendly. Their Smith shirt is organic cotton poplin and could just as easily go under a blazer or over a t-shirt in a contrasting color.

lucchese shirt

Lucchese Lucchese's Aspen shirt is made of 100% Tencel, which is derived from renewable cellulose and requires much less energy to make than other fabrics. It comes in tan, white, red and black, and is on sale now for $34.95.

planet earth shirt

Planet Earth Planet Earth's button-down shirt would look spiffy tucked into khakis for work, or left loose over a pair of jeans for a night out. With great detailing across the back of the shoulders and subtle striped texture, this is a piece you can wear everywhere. Its low-impact fabrics include organic cotton and hemp.

ht naturals shirt

HT Naturals HT Naturals guarantees Fair Trade conditions for the people who sew their clothing and supports wind power, on top of using low-impact fabrics to make their togs, like this long-sleeve tee with great stitch detailing on the shoulders. It's an organic cotton and bamboo mix. Comes in green, blue, brown and black.

faded prana blurr shirts

Left to right, Faded Glory, Prana, Blurr Kato Wal-Mart sells Faded Glory's line of organic cotton polo shirts, which come in a number of great colors and patterns. Prana's polo shirt is also organic cotton, with a shoulder-widening horizontal stripe. The contrast-stripe version from Blurr Kato will never go out of style. Polo shirts are ideal for layering with a thermal underneath or a jacket on top (or both) in the Autumn and can still be worn in the Spring and Summer. Keep your eye on this column for upcoming roundups of suits, jeans and shoes for guys, all with one eye on style, and the other on a clean and healthy Earth!
