The Simpsons Save The World

Well, at least they make it a funnier place.

Leave it to ever-genius creator Matt Groening to make "The Simpsons Movie" subplot about middle-American Springfield going green. TGC was lucky to snag a spot at the Los Angeles world premiere—and, ahem, the star-studded after-party. Spoiler alert: some story details ahead...

In the smartly incisive, truly hysterical flick, long-suffering middle child Lisa holds "An Irritating Truth" town meeting, begging citizens to stop dumping waste in Springfield's grossly polluted lake, and, for her efforts, meets her eco–soul mate—an Irish rock star's offspring who, natch, is NOT based on anyone related to Bono. Hubba, hubba.

Later, politically vocal rockers Green Day interrupt a superlong set to say a word about the environment, and the Springfield crowd, who want no part of eco-preaching, turns nasty and... Let's just say the next scene shows the band's song "American Idiot" being played on a funeral organ.

Meanwhile EPA Chief Russ Cargill (deftly voiced by Albert Brooks) identifies hapless Homer as Public Enemy #1, while, um, President Arnold Schwarzenegger (voiced by Harry Shearer) doesn't "come back" and save the world—or Springfield. But guess who does?

At the highly anticipated premiere (hey, it's been 18 years!), Westwood, Calif. unfurled a Simpsony yellow carpet and served up free D'oh-Nuts for Groening and producer James L. Brooks (as well as lots of happy homeless fans), while stars including Efren Ramirez (Pedro from "Napoleon Dynamite"), Joe Mantegna (who plays Fat Tony in the movie) and David "Don't Hassle the Hoff" Hasselhoff (sandwiched by his two teenage daughters) drew huge fan cheers.

Recycling bins were prominently placed around the after-party to grab hold of paper napkins and plates, as well as the biodegradable plastic cups made from corn rice, which, we must admit, added a guilt-free tang to the Margearitas!

Sarah Jessica Parker

The "G" list

This week's celeb-types earning green thumbs up...

Producers of Fox's television show "24" for attempting to make the production carbon neutral by the end of the next season by using biodiesel fuel to power generators and vehicles and purchasing energy from renewable power sources (wind, water and solar). The H2O-healing stars who are taking up the no-bottles/drink-tap-water cause: Rosario Dawson, Mary-Louise Parker and Sarah Jessica Parker. And if you think cyclist Lance Armstrong comes off as merely humorless and driven, check out this hilarious ESPN "SportsCenter" spot showing the athlete powering up an office building's electricity: http://youtube.com/watch?v=2XHl-WrefNE.

And brown thumbs down to...

SmartWater, bad move: Just when everyone's moving away from environmentally unfriendly bottled water, Jennifer Aniston throws her name behind this brand. Tsk, tsk. Until bottled-water makers set up giant vats where consumers can go and refill their individual bottles, we'll maintain that bottled water, regardless of the moniker, is DUMB.
