Why not give a whole new meaning to the term "fresh fruit" and pick your own for a change?

In addition to enjoying the exclusivity of being your very own fruit handler, you’ll be preventing the pollution that results from transporting that must-have produce: Much of our food travels between 1500 and 2500 miles to get to our table. That’s a heck of a lot of greenhouse gases for some berries.

Picking your own fruit guarantees you’re getting the freshest produce right from the tree. By patronizing a u-pick farm you’re supporting local agriculture, and many u-pick farms are organic, which means fewer toxic pesticides on your fruit. Even more are what’s called low-spray, which refers to an integrated pest management approach that reduces the amount of petroleum-based pesticides typically found in Big Ag-produced fruit. Less spray on fruit; less spray in you.

Reconnecting with the land is a very green thing. Get together a group of friends or family and plan a day at a u-pick farm. Start by locating a farm near you.
