30 Days to a Greener Diet - Day 11

We're increasingly detached from the food we eat, having no idea who grew it, where it came from or even what the heck is in it (have you read an ingredients list recently?). Our food has become exclusively supplied by Big Ag, with a focus on convenience and cheapness, instead of taste and diversity.

That’s not green. And it’s sure not cuisine.

We think it's time we meet some of the people who grew our dinner. Shop at a farmers' market for fresh, local goods grown by folks in your community. Become a farmer — of sorts — by joining a CSA, short for Community Supported Agriculture, a system where several people buy shares of a farm's harvest and reap weekly boxes of the freshest vegetables you can buy.

Start by going to our homepage and entering your zipcode to find farmers' markets and CSAs near you. If you’ve never thought of venturing beyond a chain supermarket, commit to shopping locally one day a week. And who knows, you might discover a new food, or farmer, that you like.
