Turkey Day is almost upon us. While for many (approximately 46 million families) that means carving the bird and enjoying a meal together. But for the folks at Farm Sanctuary, Turkey Day is about saving turkeys, not eating them.

Farm Sanctuary rescues neglected farm animals and argues for humane farm policies and vegetarian diets. For the second year running, it's lined up Ellen DeGeneres as the spokesperson for its Adopt-A-Turkey Project, a 25-year-old program that solicits $30 donations from people who want to adopt a rescued turkey.

Think of it as the presidential pardon for the 99%.

“Here at Farm Sanctuary, we live with turkeys, so we know they are interesting and intelligent and have complex emotional lives like dogs, cats and other animals," said Gene Baur, president and co-founder of Farm Sanctuary.
