Wegmans Food Markets is recalling 5,000 pounds of bulk Turkish pine nuts imported by Sunrise Commodities of Englewood Cliffs, N.J. and sold in the bulk foods departments of Wegmans stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland between July 1 and Oct. 18, 2011. The pine nuts could be contaminated with salmonella, and have been linked to an outbreak of illness. (The recalled pine nuts were not sold at the Northborough, Mass., store that opened Oct. 16.)
At least 42 people have been sickened as part of the outbreak that has touched Arizona, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Pine nuts are a key component of most pesto recipes, and as such become popular in late summer and fall as people harvest their herb gardens and look to use their basil. There are recipes with alternatives, however, like this Country Living parsley-walnut pesto recipe.
Wegmans is offering a full refund. For more information, call 800-934-6267 Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET.
