Eight-year-old EcoFish is a pioneer in the sustainable seafood industry, a niche that is vitally important in a world that needs nutritious food from increasingly depleted oceans.

The firm sells only seafood that is farmed or caught in a sustainable way, according to USA Today. And it has increasingly won contracts from big retailers like Wal-Mart, Target and Whole Foods, as well as a growing number of restaurants. The success of the company is also a testament to socially responsible investing. It started with the help of $10 million in venture capital funding from Sea Change Management, which invests in business that not only makes money but preserves the environment, according to USA Today.

Why does it matter? Three in four wild fish stocks are depleted or in slow recovery, according to the United Nations. Scientists have predicted many major fish stocks will be commercially extinct by 2050 if nothing is done to change the way we harvest fish from the ocean.

For consumers who want to buy ocean-friendly fish, look for certification by the Marine Stewardship Council, or choose species recommended by the Oceans Alive Seafood Selector.
