The nation's new nutrition guru has done sophisticated research and writing on a simple topic: why we eat so much more than we need or even want to.
Brian Wansink was appointed recently as the head of the Department of Agriculture's Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion.
A respected academic from Cornell University and the author of, most recently, Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think, he's advocated such simple strategies as choosing smaller dishes and utensils, and leaving serving dishes out of reach during meals to inhibit the temptation to take seconds.
Importantly, he'll play a critical role defining the nation's nutritional needs in the coming years. At a time when obesity is rampant, and the nation's leaders are caught up debating how much to subsidize the crops that contribute to the epidemic, simple, sound advice from the likes of Wansink is a healthy contribution to the Washington scene.
