Utah Board of Education rejected a plan to ban junk food in school cafeterias, arguing that the decision should be left with local school boards, and not decided at the state level, according to the Deseret Morning News.
It's one thing to leave the decision up to local boards, but someone has to stand up for kid's health, which is under assault from a barrage of advertising for the worst kinds of foods.
McDonald's offers Happy Meals to kids who earn A's and B's, and not only that: The fast food giant even advertises on the report card sleeves, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
No one quibbles with a treat now and again, but schools should be a place that encourages good thinking, not only about reading, writing and arithmetic, but also nutrition. A diet rich in vegetables and natural foods is important for many reasons, not least that the calcium and iron in leafy greens and milk can counteract the effect of lead exposure, which can damage IQ. There's food for thought.
