Recall Expands to Include Dozens of Whole Foods Gingerbread Houses, Baked Goods and Desserts

After Rolf's Patisserie started recalling baked desserts Friday, the recall is expanding to include Whole Foods baked goods and pastries, according to the Food and Drug Administration. The desserts have been connected to several outbreaks of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) food poisoning that, in four incidents, have sickened 100 people in Illinois and Wisconsin. The incidents reported so far were associated with catered events like holiday and company parties, and at one restaurant.

S. aureus poisoning (known popularly as a staph infection) generally causes nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea that lasts a day or two, but it can cause serious dehydration requiring medical attention in some people, particularly the very young or very old.

Rolf's Patisserie, a gourmet European style bakery located in Lincolnwood, Ill., is recalling all desserts made after Nov. 1, 2010. The products include tiramisu, cakes, cobblers, decorated cookies, tarts, pastries, and pies. Many desserts do not carry the Rolf's Patisserie label, however.

Consumers should not eat the desserts and should dispose of them in a sealed container so that people and animals (including wild animals) cannot get access to and eat them.

To date no illnesses have been reported from consumers eating products sold by Whole Foods Market, which labeled some of Rolf's Patisserie goods under the Whole Foods label. Customers who have purchased any of the listed products from Whole Foods Market may return them to the store for a full refund. The Whole Foods Market recall includes assembled Ginger Bread Houses sold in, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin. The recalled ginger bread houses may have been assembled, decorated and packaged in clear plastic wrap and sold with a Whole Foods Market scale label; some scale labels also may list "Rolf's Patisserie" as part of the description.

In addition, Whole Food-labeled baked goods involved in the recall were sold in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Wisconsin, as follows:
