Recall: Fresh Leafy Greens, Root Vegetables and Herbs

After parsley and cilantro tested positive for salmonella, J&D Produce started a recall of 21 types of its Little Bear-brand fresh produce, distributed to more than a dozen U.S. states and Canadian provinces. Here's how to identify the recalled produce.

The food recalls are piling up again. On the heels of recalls of organic alfalfa sprouts and Whole Foods baked goods and desserts, the third recall in a week has been announced by a Texas company that packages a range of fresh greens and herbs.

J&D Produce Inc. is recalling Little Bear-brand greens with pack dates of Nov. 30 or Dec. 6 after both its curly parsley in Quebec and its cilantro in Detroit tested positive for salmonella. They were sold to both retail stores and wholesalers in at least 18 U.S. states and Canadian provinces.

Eating food tainted with salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. While most recover, some may be hospitalized or even die from the infections. The elderly, very young children and those with compromised immune systems are most at risk.

The products being recalled are listed below with their PLU or UPC numbers and the states and provinces to which they were were distributed. All greens were packed in red, white, and blue waxed cartons under the Little Bear brand. The individual bunches are banded, except for Diakon, using a rubber band or a twist tie identified by a flag tag that shows a little bear with a cowboy hat, a red handkerchief and a Texas flag. See Exhibit 1 showing Little Bear flag tags and bands. (Scroll to the bottom to see examples of the types of packaging used by Little Bear brands.)
