Here's an interesting (but scary) food fact - "The food industry spends $25 billion a year marketing their products, the government spends just $1 million advertising its new food guidelines of five servings of fruits and vegetables a day." This may account for why more men, women and children are able to identify branded label processed foods over what you'd find in the bulk aisle of your natural food store or even produce bins.
The glut of eye-catching icon processed foods on the market, fast-food joints, and many of us leading more sedentary lifestyles are what's "contributing to America's growing weight problem", according to an article in The Berkshire Eagle.
The Center for Disease Control estimates that about 67% of adults are overweight -- a shift from 45% back in 1978. With America's growing weight problem and increase of processed food into their diet comes further risks of chronic illnesses such as cancer, liver disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and more.
Just many more reasons to encourage diets where the majority of your food comes from natural sources (think earth) and to stay away from energy-dense processed foods, refined white flours and sugars and anything with high fructose corn syrup. Combine this with a bit of daily exercise and maybe we'll become a nation where "thin is in" but it's achieved in a healthy, natural way.
