Details on the Organic Beef Recall

Nature's Harvest and Organic Harvest organic ground beef and beef patties are being recalled due to E. coli contamination.

First Class Foods, Inc., of Hawthorne, Calif., is recalling about 34,373 pounds of Nature's Harvest and Organic Harvest organic ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, according to the the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, seniors and persons with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness.

The organic ground beef and beef patties were distributed to retailers in California, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Washington (look for individual retailers on the FSIS Website; none were posted as of Jan. 3). The ground beef products are identifiable by the following information:

  • Each package label bears the establishment number "EST. 18895"
  • Each package label has the Pack Date of 10341 and Julian date of 10350.

The specific products affected include:

  • 16-oz. Nature's Harvest Organic Ground Beef Bricks sold singly with a "Use or Freeze By" date of either 12/30/10 or 01/08/11.
  • 16-oz. Organic Harvest Organic Gorund Beef Bricks sold singly and in three-packs with a "Use or Freeze by" date of either 12/28/10 or 01/06/11.
  • 16-oz. Nature's Harvest Ground Patty packages containing four (4) 4-oz. patties with a "Use or Freeze By" date of 12/30/10 or 01/08/11.
