The Michaels Food hard-cooked egg recall that began in January continued to grow this week, with several new products added to the list of recalls.

Listeria can cause serious illness or death, especially in young children, the frail, the elderly or pregnant women. Even healthy people exposed to listeria can experience high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Nasima Hossain, an advocate for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, said the recall indicates egg suppliers and regulators have failed to learn the lessons of past egg recalls prompted by contamination with food-borne pathogens. “This incident underscores the need for food inspections to happen at more regular intervals and for the Food Safety Modernization Act to be fully funded, so that foods with dangerous contaminants are kept off store shelves,” she said.
