The death toll from listeria-contaminated cantaloupe has grown to at least 13, and dozens have been made ill in 18 states, according to the latest statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

But it isn't the only recall sweeping the nation this week. An Andrew Williamson Fresh Produce organic grape tomato recall, due to possible salmonella contamination, is expanding, according to the Food and Drug Administration. And True Leaf Farms is recalling romaine lettuce that may be contaminated with listeria.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest notes that "consumers are waiting for the Food and Drug Administration to release guidelines and regulations to help keep pathogens out of produce." Those guidelines aren't due til January, according to the center, and Congress has refused to fully fund programs at the FDA to crack down on food-borne illness.
