California company Huntington Meat Packing Inc. expanded its January 18 recall of its beef products by recalling an additional 4.9 million pounds of beef and veal products that it says were not processed in line with its safety standards.
The US Food Safety and Inspection Service confirmed the recall after Huntington had failed to follow its food safety plan at its Montebello, Calif., plant.
A criminal investigation is underway to determine how and why the plant failed to carry out its safety plan.
The following beef and veal products, produced by the plant from January 22, 2009, to January 4, 2010, are subject to recall:
Each box bears the establishment number "EST. 17967" inside the USDA mark of inspection on a label.
