Bisphenol A, an ingredient in some plastics that has worrying effects on hormones in animal studies, has been found in liquid baby formula, according to the Toronto Star.

The chemical can leach from the lining of cans, according to a study by the Environmental Working Group.

The potential toxicity of the chemical has been controversial. The Food and Drug Administration has deemed Bisphenol A safe, but many activists and scientists disagree. Because it can mimic hormones at even small levels, some researchers have linked it to a variety of health issues, from developmental problems and early puberty to obesity and cancer.
