Beef Sold at Several Supermarkets Recalled Due to Contamination

After investigating a cluster of illnesses, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall of approximately 545,699 pounds of fresh ground beef products packaged by the New York firm Fairbank Farms. Cases of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses have been reported in Connecticut, Maine and Massachusetts.

E. coli O157:H7 symptoms can include bloody diarrhea, dehydration and in severe cases it can be deadly. Those with weak immune systems, seniors and the very young are most susceptible.

The products subject to recall for possible E. coli contamination include:

• 1-pound packages of "TRADER JOE'S BUTCHER SHOP FINE QUALITY MEATS GROUND BEEF 85/15."
• 1-pound packages of "TRADER JOE'S BUTCHER SHOP FINE QUALITY MEATS GROUND BEEF 80/20."
