Fresh whole papayas sold under four brand names Blondie, Yaya, Mañanita, and Tastylicious should not be eaten, the Food and Drug Administration is warning, if they were purchased before July 23. The FDA believes these papayas, distributed by Agromod Produce, could be contaminated with salmonella that has caused nearly 100 cases of foodborne illness in 23 states, including 10 hospitalizations.
The very old, very young and those with impaired immune systems are most at risk of severe complications from Salmonella Agona infections.
Agromod is based in Texas, and the papayas were grown in Mexico.
The FDA is urging consumers to check their kitchens and discard any papayas matching the descriptions above (see labels at right) in a sealed container, so that no pets or wild animals are exposed after disposal. Seek a refund at the place of purchase. For more information, call Agromod at 800-385-7658 weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. CST.
