Australia, which has been in the grip of a decade-long drought, may never recover from drought because global warming has permanently altered climate patterns, experts speaking at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology said, according to Asia Pulse and several subsequent stories in the Australian press.
Droughts have affected different regions around the world for prolonged periods throughout recorded history, and records hidden in ice, bogs, trees and elsewhere provide scientists with much deeper records. Whether or not climate shifts affecting Australia can truly be linked to global warming remains to be seen -- as do so many potential impacts from climate change.
But the prospect of a nation facing perpetual drought conditions raises the ugly possibility that the world's population will truly be thrown into disarray if global warming continues unchecked.
