Based on a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association today, doctors from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston have concluded that the recurrence of colon cancer in survivors that follow a diet high in processed red meat, fatty products, refined grains and sweets, increases their chances of a recurrence of the disease and early death. The idea of a connection between diet and cancer is not a new one. Among the various types of cancers, colorectal cancer seems most likely to be influenced by what people eat. According to an article in The Los Angeles Times, these findings were the first time the so-called Western diet and its link to the recurrence of colon cancer was studied. Researchers found that following a more prudent diet rich in vegetables, fruits, fish, poultry and whole grains did not necessarily reduce the possible return of colon cancer but that cancer survivor patients improved their prospects by avoiding certain foods that put them at greater risk.
