Although the addition of folic acid to cereal grains, flours, pasta and rice was originally thought to have reduced the chances of getting colon cancer, scientists now claim that it may be a contributing factor to the rise in cases each year. Colon cancer cases in the U.S. increased dramatically just after manufacturers began fortifying foods with the vitamin in the late 1990s. This spike in cases was also seen in Canada, which began Vitamin B fortification of foods around the same time. Although latest reports do not prove that extra dietary folic acid causes colon cancer, researchers indicate that the fortification "may have unforeseen trade-offs." Most caution against fortifying or adding more folic acid to your diet until the possible cancer link is further researched and understood.
