U.S. government have subsidized farmers with your hard earned tax dollars to overproduce commodity crops (such as corn and soy beans from which high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated fats are derived) for years with no regard for actual demand. These ingredients end up in the very processed foods that ultimately contribute to an overweight nation as they're calorie-dense, nutrient-lacking, inexpensive and plentiful. Critics contend that fruit and vegetable growers get the short end of the stick when it comes to subsidy funding and are pushing for a revised agricultural policy that includes price supports that will make healthy calories more competitive. All eyes are on the US Farm Bill up for vote this fall with hope that positive steps will be taken towards addressing the root cause of our national eating disorder and will focus on healthful foods. Click here for a better understanding of the US Farm Bill and steps you can take to make your voice heard in Congress. And to help support farmers while increasing the availability of locally grown, affordable and sustainable food, send a letter to your Congress person and make a difference. For every 100 message sent from your city or state, a hand delivered package of healthy and local food will be delivered to your Senators and representatives.
