Economist types warn that the retail prices of many of your shopping food staples are on the rise cost wise with no foreseeable slow down in price increase in the near future. The cause of the increase is up for debate. Some attribute it to the increased production of corn-based ethanol, which ultimately raises energy costs needed for the production of food in general. Ethanol proponents beg to differ, indicating that original production numbers for these food items were held back initially to avoid surplus thus shortchanging actual demand. With retail food prices surpassing wholesale food prices since the beginning of the year, many consumers are actually opting to eat out at restaurants more often to avoid sticker shock for food products they would normally not think twice about buying.
