Forget (for a minute) food miles, and slow food. There's a new catch phrase in the world of nutrition: "Slow Transit." This one has nothing to do with the distance food travels, but instead how fast the body processes it. The body loses its ability to efficiently process waste, the theory goes, because of the pitfalls of modern everyday life, as we deal with stress, not enough exercise, a diet of fast food and too little water. As a quick fix for the congestion-mired body, here comes probiotic-infused yogurt to save the day. Known as the "friendly" biotic, it assists the body in breaking down foods that would normally be done by natural enzymes found in raw fruits and vegetables. Check the label, though. Yogurts with a high sugar content defeat the purpose as yeast feeds off of sugar thus canceling out its good effects. Also, before loading up on yogurt-covered carob drops or pretzels, take heed. The yogurt that's beneficial to your system needs to contain live, active cultures. The bottom line is to eat fresh fruit and veggies and if you can't do that, reach for sugarless yogurts reinforced with probiotics.
