In 1989 the Snack Food Association and the National Potato Promotion Board decided to create National Snack Food Month in an attempt to increase their snack food sales during a slow time for the industry: February. This year, our friend Roger Doiron has a better idea. His newest campaign, #20ate, is urging people to lay off the junk and eat real foods for the 28 (20ate) days of February.

Apart from being the founder and weeder-in-chief at Kitchen Gardeners International, the organization that basically pushed Michelle Obama to plant the White House garden, Doiron was one of our 2009 Heart of Green Award winners. His latest mission involves organizing a counter-celebration to National Snack Food Month and promoting the consumption of real and healthy foods during the 28 days of February. His motto: "Say 'No!' to the snack food lobby's bogus 'National Snack Food Month' and 'Yes!' to real foods instead." Will we participate? The answer is easy: Of course!

Doiron's #20ate campaign sets three simple tasks we can all comply with:

  • Opt out of unhealthy and processed snacks and choose the healthy and natural alternative.
  • Share your participation in the campaign by posting stories or comments on Facebook and Twitter using hashtag #20ate.
  • Donate the money you save from avoiding junk food to a healthy food cause like Kitchens Gardeners International or your local food farmer.

There are a million food choices waiting for us every time we shop. This month, all we have to do is just choose the foods that are good for us and for our planet.
