A few weeks ago, we mentioned the latest Greenpeace report on supermarket fish, and offered a few resources for finding sustainably caught fish.
This week, the latest news from the same venerable environmental organization shows that even large, multinational supermarket chains can be swayed into action by concerned consumers. Following the report's publication, both Giant Food and Stop & Shop announced plans to stop selling shark, orange roughy, and Chilean sea bass -- three species atop the Greenpeace 'Red List' of overfished seafood -- until their populations recover.
Want to push the issue further? Greenpeace offers a one-stop form that lets you send a letter of concern to executives at Meijer's and Trader Joe's -- two of the lower-ranking markets on the seafood report.
Even if you're not inclined to political action, you can do your part. Clotilde of Chocolate & Zucchini offers a whole post full of thoughtful ways to keep on top of the sustainable-fish issue -- including links to European versions of pocket seafood guides -- and her helpful commenters offer even more tips. Our favorite: Blue Ocean Institute's FishPhone service: Text "FISH" and the name of your chosen species to 30644, and get the skinny on its status within 60 seconds.
