In a case of setting a good example in the fight against global warming emissions, the historic, iconic United Nations (UN) headquarters building in New York City will be dialing up the thermostat on the air conditioning, reports UPI.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is calling the plan Cool UN, and it will result in the 50-year-old Secretariat building becoming 5 degrees warmer. The ac will also be turned off on weekends. Instead of the required suit and tie monkey suits, those in the building will be allowed to don national dress.
Ban Ki-moon has dubbed himself the "environmental secretary-general," and he has worked to try to secure more international cooperation on curbing greenhouse gases (as well as to shore up the world's response to disasters). He has stressed the importance of both global efforts and individual actions, with everyone taking a bite out of the issue.
As other iconic NYC office buildings are using ice for cooling, it is good to see world leaders trying different strategies to reduce their carbon footprints. Every little bit can add up, especially when it comes to massive structures.
