You may have done your own home energy audit, which is great. Or maybe you just haven't gotten around to it, which is understandable. Well you have another chance to save even more, at least if you live in the Los Angeles area (for now): Sears has expanded its Blue Climate Crew home services.

On March 1, Sears' Home Energy Audit program grew from Orange County to Los Angeles proper. What does that mean? Folks can call in the Blue Crew to do an in-depth energy audit of their place, which will tell them how to save serious money on energy bills (up to 40%, according to the company).

Specifically, Sears Blue Climate Crew technicians come out and inspect your digs. They do a visual inspection, looking for ways you can save, such as making sure your water heater is well insulated. They also bring a bunch of high-tech gear, such as infrared cameras to determine gaps in your insulation and gauge the efficiency of your windows, along with "blower doors" to test how well your doors really work. They pour over your appliance and lighting energy usage, your heating system and look at your past utility bills (so get them ready!).

The audit is listed as $550 retail, although the website is currently listing a "special" of $275. That still can be more than utilities or some private audit services charge (some utilities offer low-cost or free audits during certain parts of the year, though they typically do not check quite as many things). Sears will eliminate the fee if you hire them to do follow-up work, as long as you spend at least $5,000, not counting duct cleaning or appliances.

In the long run an audit should save you money (and help you boost the value of your home!).
