I have a confession. I am not the greenest person out there. Yes, I cover green topics and try to help people learn green practices, but this change for me did not happen overnight and it still continues. Green jobs and technology are advancing so quickly it is very hard for someone to keep up. When it comes to real transformation, it came in the shape of a baby for me. The time to switch to healthy household cleaners was a no-brainer.

The more research I started doing for Great Green Idea, the more green products I started using. Simple education brought to light phthalates and BPA and other ingredients that most of us would be better off without. The obligation to leave the world cleaner and better for our children is a responsibility that we should all take seriously.

To be completely honest, not all green cleaners work as well as their counterparts, but some do. For me, this is an ongoing quest.

As parents, we take the time to make sure that we buckle our kids into the car correctly, brush their teeth and visit the doctor for checkups. Take some time this month to visit your local store and switch to a greener cleaner; your children's lungs (and your own) will thank you later.

Here is what I have found that works for my family in the quest for a clean home and better indoor air quality.

Method Cleaners: First and foremost, the smell of the cleaner is fresh. Unlike chemical-ridden cleaners, this brand has an aroma that is welcoming. It is available at stores and is readily available online. These all-purpose cleaners generally cost around $4 a bottle. I have found that the basic model is good as an all-purpose cleaner. Once you get into the kitchen and around the oven, you may have to double over on area.

Clorox Green Works: What first drew me to this product was the brand name. Yup, I am a sucker for them. It works great on tougher kitchen messes. It doesn't smell as nice as the Method, but it may be a bit more widely available. These cleaners also generally cost around $4 a bottle.

Those are two products that I personally have used, but there are many other high-quality brands on the market, such as Seventh Generation. Seventh Generation has taken a leap to reach more consumers and will now be available at Wal-Mart.

Going green is a long-term approach to how we live our lives. Taking care of our bodies and surroundings using clean products just makes sense.
