A "systematic inventory" of toys by several manufacturers has turned up -- surprise! -- another 500,000 toys have been recalled because they contain lead paint. The latest recall includes more toys made by the maker of Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway toys, the manufacturer that started the recall blitz back in June. We can't help but wonder why toymakers didn't systematically check their products for neurotoxins that attack children's brains and that can cause serious and permanent damage. (Remember, that's why the United States banned lead paint and leaded gasoline three decades ago -- because the risk of low levels of lead in the environment posed too great a risk to children.)
This won't be the last of the recalls. Toymakers are continuing to check their inventories, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission expects them to find more bad products, according to the Los Angeles Times. If you're wondering why the CPSC hadn't been doing more before now to check for unsafe toys, consider this: There's only a single employee responsible for testing all toys suspected of having defects.
