Dell Targets Greater Energy Efficiency for Products
Laptops and Desktops to Use 25% Less Energy by 2010
Texas-based computer giant Dell has announced that its popular laptops and desktops will use 25% less energy by 2010. The company says the goal is in response to global warming as well as rising energy costs.
According to Dell, the energy efficiency of the brand's OptiPlex desktops has already improved nearly 50 percent since 2005, while Latitude laptops have improved 16 percent since 2006.
How will the targets be reached? Dell plans on getting there with more advanced energy-saving designs and power management features, from better fans and chip sets to 80 PLUS certified power supplies.
The company is also promoting its online energy calculators. Due to the on-board power-management features, since 2005, Dell estimates that its Optiplex systems have helped customers save more than $2.4 billion and avoid approximately 23 million tons of CO2.
Dell has also recently pledged to become the first computer company to render its global operations effectively carbon eutral, which it homes to achieve by the end of this year.
