On Friday, The Daily Green will join Earth Day New York in celebrating Earth Day Friday. Look for us on Vanderbilt Avenue near Grand Central Terminal if you're in the area!
Whether or not you're in New York, you can participate in the event by texting the word "TREE" to 85944. Doing so will donate $5 through your phone bill to Green World Campaign, which will plant a tree for every dollar donated. (You can text up to five times, for a total donation of $25 if you wish.)
In addition to the real tree planted in an area of need internationally in support of the United Nations' International Year of Forests campaign, you'll plant a virtual tree in Times Square. The many screens in Times Square operated by Toshiba, MTV, Reuters, CBS, CNN and NASDAQ will be transformed for an hour from noon to 1 p.m. Friday into a virtual forest to illustrate the campaign's success and the need for conservation.
Pretty cool. And as far as taking action on Earth Day goes, it's as easy as it gets.
