Saturday is National Public Lands Day, a day dedicated to celebrating a great American idea: the preservation of land for public enjoyment, rather than private or government exploitation.
"More than 180,000 volunteers are expected at more than 2,000 sites across the country to take part in the initiativethe largest single-day volunteer effort for public lands in the United Statesto improve and restore the lands and facilities that Americans use for recreation, education, exercise and enjoyment," according to the White House Council on Environmental Quality.
Take the kids. Children benefit greatly from experiences in nature, but spend less and less time outdoors. Instilling a sense of volunteerism isn't a bad thing for kids either. To find participating sites and volunteer opportunities, visit publiclandsday.org.
