While you're switching your lights to compact fluorescents (CFLs), you can go even greener by also installing motion sensor lighting fixtures in key locations. These turn on only when movement is detected and turn off automatically, a feature that also helps with security.

Not only is outdoor lighting a big waste of energy and dollars, but it can be disruptive to wildlife if your outside flood lights are left on all night. (The classic example is on the beach, where the lights from oceanfront property can disrupt the nesting of sea turtles.) Outdoor lighting also contributes to "light pollution," which keeps neighbors from being able to see the stars and other nighttime delights.

So save electricity and money with motion sensors and let nature take back the night.

See more home fixes that pay off, and learn about the ROI for upgrading to energy efficient lighting.
