Marking our nation's rise from Colonial dominance, Independence Day is a special time for celebration with friends, family and communities. Yet that doesn't mean you have to shuttle aside any commitment to a cleaner planet, and wake up on July 5th with a guilt hangover from overconsumption.
There are lots of ways to enjoy the unofficial kickoff to summer and keep things relatively eco-friendly. For example, since fireworks contribute to acid rain and release toxic chemicals like heavy metals, potassium nitrate, sulfur-coal compounds and arsenic, consider some fun alternatives. Examples include hosting a piñata party, going to a laser light show, attending a parade or block party, or making your own noisemakers.
If you spend time in the great outdoors, go prepared with natural insect repellents and nontoxic sunscreens especially if you hit the beach. Pack along some organic wine or beer, and savor some delicious green grilling. Or host a picnic (watch out for dancing bears).
Another thing to consider is sticking closer to home this year, so you don't have to take a hit from record-high gas prices. If you do need to travel, reduce fuel expense with these tips. Carpool or take public transit if you can.
